Hermes Agent v0.22 — Nous Research calls it the Threshold Release — changes who gets to use Hermes. For the first time you can open Hermes on a brand-new computer and start talking to it before you’ve paid for anything: no API key, no settings screen, no setup guide. It’s also the biggest Hermes release ever. I break it all down in the video below. Here’s what changed, the simple way I think about it, and what to check before you update.
Key takeaways
- Released 13 October 2026 — about 2.5× bigger than v0.21, with a codebase about a third smaller.
- Setup is now a chat running on a free Welcome trial model — no API key needed.
- New: connectors, one-click local models, a 600-plugin catalogue and password-manager logins.
- Check the upgrade notes: Python 3.14, MSIX-only Windows, renamed tools.
What Hermes Agent v0.22 is
Hermes already had a lot of power. The problem was the front door. For most people the hard part of any agent has never been the agent — it’s the first hour: get an API key, add a card, paste a long string in the right place, set up apps and plugins, pick a model. One wrong step and most people close the window. When I help business owners get started with agents, it’s almost never the big stuff that stops them; it’s a key, a file, a setting.
The release notes sum it up in one line: the last version assembled the Pantheon, and this one is about getting through the door. v0.22 goes straight after that first-hour problem.

The Front Door Engine: how I think about v0.22
Every big feature in this release fits one of three moves. I call it the Front Door Engine: you walk in, you plug in, and you hand off.
| Move | What v0.22 changed | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Walk in | Guided setup chat, free nous/welcome trial model, signed desktop apps, stable releases by default | You can start without an API key, and updates don’t break your setup |
| 2. Plug in | Connectors for apps like Notion and Linear, a 600-plugin catalogue, password-manager logins | Hermes can reach your tools safely |
| 3. Hand off | Bot Screen, reasoning replay, automatic recovery from provider slowdowns | You can give it a long job, walk away and come back to it still moving |

Move 1: walk in — setup is now a chat
Open the desktop app on a computer that’s never had Hermes and it doesn’t show you a settings page. It talks to you, one card at a time: your name, an accent colour, a layout, which apps to connect, which plugins you want, a quick tour, and then up to four first tasks picked for you. It all runs on a free trial model called Welcome (nous/welcome), available once per user, so you don’t need a key to start. You can skip at any time and run it again from Settings.
There’s a fun extra too: a new theme tool means you can type “make it violet dark mode” and Hermes changes its own look. Small thing, but it shows the direction — you talk to it, and it does the setup for you.
Walking in also means it keeps working. Installs now follow tested, versioned stable releases by default, desktop apps ship signed with everything they need inside (including a Microsoft Store version on Windows and a notarised Apple Silicon build on Mac), and a new package manager, hermes pm, builds each update separately and only switches over once it passes its checks. A failed update can no longer leave you with a broken half-version.
Move 2: plug in — connectors, plugins and local models
Connectors. Hermes can now work inside apps you already use, like Notion and Linear. You sign in once in your browser and the tools work in the same chat. You don’t need a Nous account to start — the first connection creates a free, connectors-only identity — and you can connect several accounts for the same app, say work and home, side by side. A new Connectors page in the desktop app lists hosted apps and MCP servers together.
Local models. This is the one a lot of people will miss. Hermes now installs and manages llama.cpp for you, checks your computer’s memory and graphics chip, scores the models in its list and picks the best one your machine can handle. Downloads pause and resume, and it works on Windows, Mac and Linux. Nothing leaves your machine — no account, no key. Give it a folder of client notes and it does the job on your laptop with none of it sent anywhere.
Plugins. The plugin catalogue went from nothing to 600 entries in one cycle, each pinned to a reviewed version. Memory providers like Honcho, Supermemory, Hindsight and Mem0 now live in the catalogue, alongside Spotify, Home Assistant and much more. My best Hermes plugins guide covers the ones worth installing.
Password-manager logins. The browser agent can now sign into websites using 1Password, Bitwarden or Hermes’s own encrypted vault, and the AI never sees the password. One-time codes get filled without entering the chat, and anything involving a card or address at checkout asks you first. So you can say “log into my account on this site and pull last month’s report” without handing over your password.
Move 3: hand off — long jobs that keep going
Walking in and plugging in only help if you can then hand over real work and trust it to keep going. This is the move that matters most for a business.
- Bot Screen: a bot running on a server can now stream its own desktop to the Hermes app. When it hits a login, a 2FA prompt or a CAPTCHA, you take over, do that one step and hand it back. It’s off by default.
- Reasoning replay: Hermes now replays its earlier thinking by default on models that support it, so long jobs keep their train of thought across pauses, resumes and context compaction.
- Bad-day recovery: when a provider has a bad hour, Hermes waits it out in short, visible retry cycles instead of ending your task.
- Scheduled jobs with memory (from v0.21): your 9am briefing remembers what it told you yesterday, so it doesn’t repeat itself.
Put those together and you get an agent you can give a job, go to the gym, and come back to with the job still moving.

A follow-up, v0.22.1, landed the next morning with fixes for the Windows Store version and a cleaner model picker with a short list of handpicked models at the top — plus a simple mode in the desktop app if you don’t want to see the advanced settings. My best Hermes model guide covers which to use for what.
Before you update to Hermes Agent v0.22
It’s a big release, so read the upgrade notes first. The ones most likely to affect you:
- Python 3.14 is now the runtime for managed installs.
- Windows desktop is MSIX-only and needs Windows 11 22H2 or later; the old installers were removed.
- macOS desktop defaults to Apple Silicon only.
- One gateway per machine is now the default;
hermes updatemerges per-profile gateways where it can. - Idle and daily session resets are retired — use
/newor/reset. - Auto-prune deletes ended sessions inactive for 90 days (turn off with
sessions.auto_prune: false). - Renamed tools:
todo→todo_list,cronjob→cronjob_manage,process→process_manage(old names still work). - Removed:
hermes sync(Skill Sync) and the plugin compatibility import layer.
Back up before you update — hermes update --backup takes a full backup first. My Hermes backup guide covers restoring if you need to.
How to get started with Hermes Agent v0.22
- New to Hermes: download the desktop app, open it and talk to the setup chat. Use the free Welcome model, pick a paid model, or let it run a local one.
- Already on Hermes: run
hermes update(existing installs don’t get the setup chat automatically — run it from Settings if you want it). - Want local only: Settings → Providers → Local Models, or
hermes modelin a terminal. - Want your apps connected: open the Connectors page or run
/connectors.
Why v0.22 means agents are now for everyone
A year ago you really did need to be comfortable with files, keys and terminal commands to use an AI agent. Look at what this release did: the setup is a chat, it asks your name, it picks your first tasks, and you change how it looks just by asking. The whole point of the Threshold Release was to remove the tech part from the first hour.
Some people say whatever they learn about agents will be out of date fast. I see it the other way: the people who learn the basics now get every upgrade for free, because they already know where it fits. Inside the AI Profit Boardroom, some of the people doing best with agents had never used one before they joined.
The bottom line on Hermes Agent v0.22
Hermes Agent v0.22 is the release that opens the front door: walk in without a key, plug in your apps and plugins safely, and hand off long jobs that keep going. If you’ve been waiting for agents to get easier, this is the version to start with.
